It was a particularly tragic weekend for the UC San Diego community as we lost two valued campus members – a Revelle College student and a bioengineering project scientist. Our hearts and thoughts go out to the families, friends and colleagues of these beloved individuals.
An astronomer long fascinated with contacting civilizations beyond our solar system becomes involved in a government-funded project to search the heavens for extraterrestrial radio signals. When the federal government ends funding for her project, she continues the effort with private support, eventually detects the radio signal she’s been hoping for and is chosen to make the first contact with an advanced civilization.
For Pauline Foster, community philanthropist and longtime supporter of the University of California, San Diego, giving $7.5 million in support of the new cancer care hospital at the UC San Diego Jacobs Medical Center is a gift from the heart—both her husband and brother died of cancer. The campus announced today that the facility will be named “The Pauline and Stanley Foster Hospital for Cancer Care,” in consideration of her charitable contribution.
UC San Diego opened its doors to thousands of newly admitted transfer students and their families on campus Saturday for Transfer Triton Day. In the same tradition as Triton Day, which is targeted toward admitted freshmen, Transfer Triton Day brought together the entire campus community to encourage admitted transfer students to accept their offer of admission to UC San Diego for fall 2014.
Five winners have been selected to receive complimentary pairs of tickets to TEDxUCSD and dinner with the speakers at a pre-conference mixer courtesy of Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla. More than 1,800 entries were received for the giveaway contest, which was open to the campus community from April 24 through April 29.
This month—all around San Diego County and the state—elementary, middle and high school students are hunkering down in front of computers and tablets to field-test new assessments in mathematics and English language arts. These tests are part of the Common Core State Standards newly being implemented in California. The new standards, along with California’s Next Generation Science Standards, which will be required of all California public schools by 2016, endeavor to move students toward deeper learning and represent the most profound change to affect education in 25 years.
