If one thing changes, everything changes. This was the message that 300 faculty, staff and students received on Oct. 19 at the launch of UC San Diego’s Strategic Plan for Inclusive Excellence. More than just informational, the event was a call to action for each and every person at our university to recognize their role and responsibility in making UC San Diego an inclusive place where all have the opportunity to achieve their aspirations.

Applying design thinking to complex problems like health care and transportation. These are just a few of the forward-thinking projects by UC San Diego researchers and entrepreneurs that were featured during a recent series of bi-coastal events to engage alumni, parents and friends in the Campaign for UC San Diego.
Elisa Quintana didn’t always see herself becoming a NASA scientist. She had a bit of a rocky start at school before transferring to UC San Diego to study physics, where she chose astronaut and physics professor Sally Ride as her advisor. Today, this UC San Diego graduate is searching for exoplanets—planets outside of Earth’s solar system—and inspiring a new generation of students to get interested in science.
Understanding the control of cell growth has challenged biomedical researchers for decades. Efforts to meet this challenge may have received an encouraging boost, however, from University of California San Diego physics professor Terence Hwa and colleagues. Their research, published in the Oct. 25 issue of Nature, led to the surprising discovery of a mathematical equation governing the control of cell growth.
The University of California San Diego has been named the globe’s 16th best university by U.S. News and World Report. The campus was also recognized as the nation’s 5th best public university in the fourth annual rankings, which measure factors such as research, global and regional reputation; international collaboration; as well as the number of highly-cited papers and doctorates awarded.
The University of California San Diego’s commitment to reducing energy use recently garnered the campus a first place award in the North American Laboratory Freezer Challenge. The nationwide best practice competition encourages laboratories to reduce the environmental and financial costs of ultra-low temperature freezers.
