UC San Diego’s Entrepreneurs-in-Residence program, which currently features three savvy business professionals who help advise students on start-up ideas, has gained two additional experts.
Composer Hilda Paredes used the Mayan calendar as the basis for her solo percussion piece, “Tzolkin,” with soft eerie pulses suggesting the passage of ancient time. In a sense, her music bridged the divide between modern Mexico and its poor indigenous communities. Paredes’ work, and other compositions from around the world, will be performed Feb. 26 – 28 at UC San Diego Department of Music’s Intercultural Music Conference (ICM). More than 80 composers, scholars and performers will present three days of lectures, concerts and panel discussions exploring music in our rapidly evolving intercultural landscape. They’ll consider music in the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Mexico and other locales. Concerts will showcase both traditional and contemporary music.
Becky Petitt will soon mark her one year anniversary as Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) at the University of California, San Diego. In the past 11 months, Petitt has made progress in implementing new campus climate programs, policies and perspectives to create a more inclusive community for faculty, staff and students.
Since its inception in 2005, the UC San Diego Winter GameFest has brought thousands of gaming enthusiasts to campus to battle it out in the fest’s myriad competitions. The largest student-run gaming festival on the West Coast, the Winter GameFest has evolved from a simple gaming tournament into a two-day celebration of entertainment and technology organized entirely by UC San Diego’s Sixth College Technology Committee. The GameFest returned to campus this year in its 11th iteration.
Delivering on the late astronaut Sally Ride’s pioneering spirit, UC San Diego today announced the official launch of Sally Ride Science at UC San Diego with a slate of summer workshops in science, technology, engineering, art and math, or STEAM, aimed at young women in middle school and high school.

Last week, UC San Diego’s generous donors and scholarship recipients came together to celebrate the gift of education at the university’s annual Hearts and Scholars dinner. Students were able to meet and thank the benefactors who have helped make their educations possible, while donors were able to learn more about the impact of their support.
