Since 2020 when the Halicioğlu Data Science Institute (HDSI) at UC San Diego established its Senior Capstone Program, it has become the premier series for all fourth-year undergraduate data science majors at HDSI – a pioneering interdisciplinary institute advancing data science and AI education within the new School of Computing, Information and Data Sciences (SCIDS) at the university. The program requires all students to undergo a two-quarter research experience with a faculty member or industry engineer before graduating.
Five UC San Diego graduate students applying engineering principles to solve medical challenges have been selected as 2025 Siebel Scholars. The Siebel Scholars program recognizes the most talented students in the world’s leading graduate schools of business, computer science, bioengineering and energy science.
The California Energy Commission approved a $7 million award to UC San Diego to replace a decade-old battery with one large enough to power 5,000 homes for four hours. Scheduled to come online in the latter half of 2025, the new system represents an eight-fold increase in capacity and will play a critical role in modernizing UC San Diego’s microgrid while providing reliable and cost-effective energy for the entire campus.
UC San Diego has been ranked No. 3 among public U.S. universities in the 2024 Academic Ranking of World Universities released by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy. The university also advanced to No. 14 among U.S. colleges overall and No. 18 in the world in the annual list.
UC San Diego and its partners officially opened the Goeddel Family Technology Sandbox, a hub that brings together cutting-edge instruments for science and education. The facility is one of the world’s most pioneering centers for technology across the biological, physical and health sciences.
