Work of Renowned Multimedia Artist Joyce Cutler-Shaw Featured in “Library Duet” Exhibitions

The UC San Diego Library and the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library in La Jolla are teaming up to celebrate the work of internationally acclaimed multimedia artist Joyce Cutler-Shaw. The joint exhibition, “Library Duet,” highlights the many stages of a distinguished and prolific artist’s career. The Athenaeum exhibit, opening September 23, will display a retrospective of Cutler-Shaw’s artist’s books from its permanent collection, while the UC San Diego Library will exhibit Cutler-Shaw’s archival materials, including its permanent display—Alphabet of Bones—and Cutler-Shaw’s current work, Brain Project. An opening reception will be held in Geisel Library on Thursday, October 5, 2017 from 5 – 7 pm in the Seuss Room.

UC San Diego Archaeologist to Fly Explorers Club Flag on Desert Land and Sea Expedition in Israel

On Aug. 29, UC San Diego archaeologist Tom Levy leads an expedition for the first-ever desert land-and-sea integrated cyber-archaeology project to be carried out in Israel, and the expedition will be flying The Explorers Club flag (as Levy did in 2011 with an expedition to southern Jordan).

Prestigious Rankings Name UC San Diego 15th Best University in the World

The University of California San Diego has been ranked the 15th best university in the world by the 2017 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). UC San Diego was also named the world’s third best public college. The campus was named the world’s fourth best public college and nationally, UC San Diego was recognized as the country’s 13th best university.

UC San Diego Literature Department Excellence Reflected in Alumna’s First Novel

The University of California San Diego Department of Literature ranks among the best in the nation for creative writing. Alumna Kaitlin Solimine’s (MFA, ’11) “Empire of Glass” demonstrates that excellence with its inclusion on The Center for Fiction's 2017 First Novel Prize long list. Her premier novel, which emerged from her MFA thesis, is an investigation into the workings of human memory and the veracity of oral history that pushes the boundaries between language and form in profound ways.
