University of California San Diego Department of History professor Karl Gerth was awarded two prestigious fellowships totaling $145,000 to further his research on the implications of Chinese consumerism.
For consumers looking to reduce their consumption of meat — particularly due to a greater understanding of the ethical treatment of animals — researchers have analyzed the leading cookbooks of 26 celebrity chefs to offer insight and guidance. Their findings show that not all chefs are what they appear: while some offer recipes that align with their public personas, others show great dissonance in what is said, and what is cooked.
On April 9, University of California San Diego and SmartMoney Startups will host -community leaders, active-duty military and veterans to celebrate the inaugural launch of Startup Battlefield 101 at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. The eight-week certificate program will teach transitioning military members, veterans and military spouses about today’s private sector landscape and how to adapt military strategic planning skills to the startup environment.
Established in 1988 by a group of dedicated staff and grassroots activists, the University of California San Diego’s CARE at the Sexual Assault Resource Center has been a standard-bearer of survivor support services and prevention education for campus sexual assault, relationship violence and stalking. As the campus recognizes Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) in April, the center will hold events looking back at the pioneering work in support services and rape prevention, while moving forward to inform individuals how they can use their voice to promote a safe and respectful community and stop sexual violence before it happens.
The Cultural Heritage Engineering Initiative (CHEI), based at the University of California San Diego, has received $225,000 from San Diego-based entrepreneur Brian Strauss to enable digital visualization technologies that make it possible to see cultural heritage sites and artifacts in entirely new ways -- like “the La Brea tar pits without the tar.”
Renowned plant physiologist Graham Farquhar, Ph.D., will speak at the University of California San Diego at 3:30 p.m. on March 21 as part of the annual Kyoto Prize Symposium. Farquhar received the 2017 Kyoto Prize, Japan’s highest private award for global achievement, in the area of “Basic Sciences” for his contributions to environmental science and climate change science.
