Writer and Alumnus Rex Pickett Donates Personal Archive to UC San Diego Library
UC San Diego Alumnus Rex Pickett, known best for “Sideways,” his hilarious, best-selling novel about the exploits of two old college buddies on a wine-enriched road trip, has donated his personal papers to the Library’s Special Collections. The archive includes a wide range of materials—including posters, photographs, and other memorabilia—both from the novel and the wildly popular movie it spawned.

UCSD Library Panel Features Veterans of the Civil Rights Movement
On February 22, as part of its Black History Month activities, the UC San Diego Library will hold a panel discussion from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. that will include City of San Diego Mayor Bob Filner, a Freedom Rider, and other activists from the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.
Historian Mark Hanna to Discuss “Pirates in Print” at UCSD Library Jan. 16
UC San Diego historian Mark Hanna, an authority on the rise and fall of pirates during the first British Empire, will deliver a lecture at 1 p.m. on January 16 on “Pirates in Print: Seafaring Treasures of the Mandeville Special Collections Library.” The lecture is free and open to the public and takes place in the Seuss Room in Geisel Library on the UC San Diego campus.
Geisel Library Exhibit Traces Chicano Activism in San Diego
“There is an old saying that people without a history is like a tree without roots,” said Herman Baca, founder and longtime chairman of the Committee on Chicano Rights. “It’s important for people to know their history, especially when they face the same struggles and issues today that their community has faced for generations.”
