The Desert Research Institute, the environmental research arm of the Nevada System of Higher Education, has awarded University of California, San Diego research scientist Albert Yu-Min Lin its 27th annual Nevada Medal for his work in digital exploration and science education. Lin is the youngest research scientist and the first materials scientist and engineer to receive the DRI Nevada Medal.
The University of California, San Diego has been ranked the 20th best university in the world in a new global ranking that measures universities’ quality of education and training of students as well as the prestige of the faculty and the quality of their research.
UC San Diego Alumnus Rex Pickett, known best for “Sideways,” his hilarious, best-selling novel about the exploits of two old college buddies on a wine-enriched road trip, has donated his personal papers to the Library’s Special Collections. The archive includes a wide range of materials—including posters, photographs, and other memorabilia—both from the novel and the wildly popular movie it spawned.

In a new college affordability ranking, the University of California, San Diego has been named the 6th best college in California for its return on investment for graduates. On average, UC San Diego alumni enter the workforce earning an estimated $48,400 per year after graduation, positioning the university among the most financially effective of all California post-secondary schools.
Celebrated speakers of the University of California, San Diego’s commencement series, including comedian Lewis Black, San Diego City Council member Sherri Lightner, former White House doctor Connie Mariano and former president of the 10 campus University of California system Richard Atkinson, will give the keynote address to 7,860 graduating students this June.
