Researchers at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at the University of California, San Diego, have built a Linux cluster using 16 Raspberry Pi computers as part of a program to teach children and adults the basics of parallel computing using a simple model that demonstrates how computers leverage their capacity when working together.

The San Diego Supercomputer Center at the University of California, San Diego, in a partnership with selected local middle schools and CONNECT’s Entrepreneurs for Young Innovators program through a grant from The Parker Foundation, has started a series of computer science workshops aimed at getting more minority and female students involved in computing. SDSC’s StudentTECH computing workshops are designed to entice students from middle and high schools to enroll in computer science courses in high school and college.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a $5 million grant for a collaborative five-year project under which researchers at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at the University of California, San Diego will help develop and build a Science Gateway Platform (SciGaP) as a service to advance scientific discovery by providing researchers improved access to a variety of hosted or cloud services.
