Audrey Geisel, a devoted philanthropist, business leader and wife of the late Theodor “Dr. Seuss” Geisel, died on December 19, 2018. She was 97.

This fall, the Holocaust Living History Workshop once again launches its year-long series of educational events composed of eight seminars, a documentary film screening and a photography exhibition underscoring this year’s theme, “History, Memory & Meaning of the Holocaust.” The workshops are presented by the UC San Diego Library and the UC San Diego Jewish Studies Program.

Erik T. Mitchell, Ph.D. has been appointed university librarian at the University of California San Diego effective April 16, 2018. Mitchell currently serves as associate university librarian of Digital Initiatives and Collaborative Services and associate chief information officer at UC Berkeley.

Philippe Sands has been dedicated to human rights issues throughout his career and has worked on high-profile human rights cases involving abuse. Now, in his book East West Street, Sands explores the creation and development of legal concepts that came about as a result of Hitler's Third Reich which changes our understanding of history and how civilization has tried to cope with mass murder.

The 2017-18 Holocaust Living History Workshops continue this January with six profound lectures focusing on the roles of memory and justice in the process of renewal following the persecution of countless individuals during the Holocaust. The National Science Foundation has awarded $2.8 million to the University of California San Diego to construct a replica ocean-atmosphere system on the Scripps Institution of Oceanography campus. The new Scripps Ocean Atmosphere Research Simulator will mimic the ocean with unprecedented accuracy, capturing the interactions of wind, waves, microbial marine life, and chemistry at the sea surface in a laboratory setting.

A noted scholar and a world-leader in microbiome research, Rob Knight, Ph.D. will take guests inside the human body and share the dirt on the microbiome, the focus of his new book, published in June 2017. On Tuesday, October 24, Knight will discuss Dirt Is Good: The Advantage of Germs for Your Child’s Developing Immune System, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. in Geisel Library’s Seuss Room. The UC San Diego Library talk is free to attend and open to the public. A reception and a book signing with Dr. Knight will follow. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event from the UC San Diego Bookstore.
