U.S. News and World Report has named the University of California San Diego the 15th best university in the world, up four spots compared to last year, in the third annual global rankings, released today. The campus was ranked as the 4th best public university in the U.S. on the list of the world’s top 1,000 colleges. The rankings measure factors such as research, global and regional reputation, international collaboration as well as number of highly-cited papers and doctorates awarded.

UC San Diego’s new Institute of Arts and Humanities (IAH) makes its public debut this fall with a series of events that explore issues of race, culture and social justice. The campus events, one which took place Oct. 18 and the other occurring Oct. 25 and 27, spur thought-provoking exchanges about urgent issues faced by American cities, including San Diego. The programs also tackle ideas at the core of the institute—bringing together diverse UC San Diego programs in a shared mission.

Composer Roger Reynolds’ “FLiGHT,” which premieres Oct. 30-31 at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City, is the latest landmark in a career distinguished by a quest for new modes of making music. It combines spoken word, musical performance, computer sound processing and video to create an immersive multimedia experience.

The University of California San Diego’s Division of Arts and Humanities took a leading role to secure a $2.59 million grant award from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The award supports a joint program with the San Diego Community College District (SDDCD) that helps humanities transfer students transition to UC San Diego—a top 10 public university. According to Dean Cristina Della Coletta, it is the largest foundation award the division has received in support of the humanities.

Peter Otto, founding director of the Qualcomm Institute Sonic Arts Laboratory at the University of California San Diego, has joined the award-winning audio technology company Comhear, Inc. as Chief Science Officer.

The 2016-2017 season of the Qualcomm Institute’s primary performance series gets underway on October 20. The performances and artist residencies were awarded by the Initiative for Digital Exploration of Arts and Sciences (IDEAS) following a peer-review competition open to faculty and graduate students in Music, Theatre and Dance and Visual Arts, as well as any engineering discipline.

LED lights in the shape of a 3D printer head light up the word “3D” in the window of the EnVision Arts and Engineering Maker Studio, visible to passersby. The LED interactive display art was one of the projects that a team of interns worked on over the summer as part of a new summer internship program at the EnVision Maker Studio.

The Holocaust Living History Workshop (HLWH) at the University of California San Diego kicks off a year-long series of educational events with two compelling programs this fall, underscoring this year’s theme “Holocaust and the Burden of History.” The 2016-17 workshop events will approach the Holocaust from various angles to shed light on lesser-known aspects of the atrocities committed.
