UC San Diego’s IAH, CaliBaja Center Host Art Sale to Support Latina/o Students

The Institute of Arts and Humanities (IAH) and the CaliBaja Center for Resilient Materials and Systems are hosting their first scholarship fundraiser for UC San Diego Latina/o students. The “Exhibit and Sale of Mexican Fine Art and Folk Art” takes place at the Great Hall in the International House on campus, Nov. 19 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Nov. 20 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Event organizers, Luis Alvarez, director of the IAH, and Olivia A. Graeve, professor of mechanics and materials at the Jacobs School of Engineering, hope to raise $30,000 in support of student scholarships.

“The fundraiser brings the UC San Diego and broader San Diego/Tijuana communities together to support our growing Latina/o student population, encourage their continued excellence in all fields from engineering to the arts and humanities, and underscore the university’s steadfast commitment to diversity and an equitable campus climate,” said Alvarez.

Fine artists who will be featured during the fundraiser include: German Rubio, Esau Andrade, David Silvah and Jaime Carbo.

Featured folk artists include: Fernando Jimon, Tonala burnished clay; Enedina Vasquez, Oaxacan ceramics (Galardon Presidencial de Ceramica); Ricardo Linares, Albrijes from Mexico City; Dania Elisai, Day of the Dead paper mache figurines; Angelico Jimenez, Oaxacan woodcarvings; and Tiburcio Soteno, Trees of Life from Metepec (Great Master of Mexican Folk Art).

The Institute of Arts and Humanities resides within UC San Diego’s Division of Arts and Humanities, which jumped 10 spots to rank #23 in U.S. News and World Report’s recent Best Global Universities listing. The CaliBaja Center is an agile research center of the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering, which ranks #8 in the nation in the same U.S. News ranking.
