With his retirement on the horizon, University Librarian Brian Schottlaender has pledged two generous gifts to the UC San Diego Library, one to advance the Geisel Library Revitalization Initiative (GLRI) and another to support the Archive for New Poetry in the Library's Special Collections & Archives.

Throughout the month of April, UC San Diego will recognize Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) as part of the campus’s mission to provide resources, education and support for the prevention of sexual violence. This year’s SAAM theme, “Engaging New Voices,” was established by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center to encourage and inform a wider audience about how to take action and stop sexual violence before it happens.

Internationally acclaimed multimedia artist, Joyce Cutler-Shaw, a member of the University of California San Diego’s inaugural MFA (Master of Fine Arts) class of 1972, has received the UC San Diego Library’s Geisel Citation award for Library Philanthropy. Cutler-Shaw is the first alumna to receive the Library’s annual Geisel Citation, which is presented to active and stalwart supporters, who have made significant contributions to the growth and success of the Library.

UC San Diego Health has again been named a “Leader in LGBTQ Healthcare Equality” by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, the educational arm of the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer civil rights organization.

A $75 million gift from Facebook pioneer Taner Halicioglu will establish the Halicioglu Institute for Data Science at UC San Diego. The computer science alumnus hopes that the new institute will promote a cross-disciplinary field that is considered the backbone of many other disciplines.

From virtual reality to crowdsourcing ideas, participants at UC Health Hack 2017 combined creativity and problem-solving to create projects addressing critical issues in health systems and global health. The 181 participants focused on one of two tracks: health care delivery or refugee health.

CNS postdoctoral researcher Alper Sinan Akyurek and CSE professor Tajana Rosing developed an algorithm for controlling batteries that can decrease the utility cost of an actual building by up to 50 percent compared to a building powered without the use of batteries.

Graduate students at the University of California San Diego will stage an original work and performance on Thursday, March 23, in the Qualcomm Institute on the university campus. Their interdisciplinary work, “The Burden of Selfhood”, will explore the themes of feminism, identity and technology.

Hundreds of visitors recently helped usher in “Making Communities: Art and the Border,” an exhibition that shines a light on immigrant communities as a source of creativity. During its opening, several UC San Diego artists participated in a speaking program addressing the recent rhetoric citing Mexico as a source of crime and economic decline. Curated by Ph.D. alumna Tatiana Sizonenko (’13), this third major exhibition in a series of programs celebrating the Department of Visual Arts’ 50th anniversary—“VISUAL ARTS @ 50: ART INTO LIFE—is on view now through April 13 at three distinct campus locations: the University Art Gallery (UAG), the SME Visual Arts Gallery (SME) and the Cross Cultural Center galleries.
