On Jan. 23, the County of San Diego Board of Supervisors voted to approve an investment in technology developed at the University of California San Diego that will improve the County’s fire detection and response capabilities. The County unanimously approved $437,174 to make critical upgrades to the High-Performance Wireless Research and Education Network (HPWREN) and Alert Wildfire network, operated by Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the San Diego Supercomputer Center at UC San Diego.

Brightly colored Australian peacock spiders (Maratus spp.) captivate even the most arachnophobic viewers with their flamboyant courtship displays featuring diverse and intricate body colorations, patterns, and movements – all packed into miniature bodies measuring less than five millimeters in size for many species. However, these displays are not just pretty to look at. They also inspire new ways for humans to produce color in technology.

According to CalFire, the State of California has experienced nearly 6,500 fires since the start of the year. This marks a 40 percent increase over the same period in 2016. With a longer fire season becoming the new norm, wildfires are a growing hazard facing the entire state.

UC San Diego’s oldest living alumnus, Walter Munk, capped a weeklong celebration of his 100th birthday with an event fit for a prince. His Serene Highness (H.S.H.) Prince Albert II of Monaco returned to UC San Diego on Oct. 26 to join the renowned oceanographer in a Centennial Conversation where the two discussed their shared passion for ocean exploration, the importance of investing in scientific research, and hope for collaborating to solve climate change in the future.

Walter Munk joined Scripps Institution of Oceanography as a young doctoral student in 1939 in what would start a nearly eight-decade-long career of scientific discovery, daring science and transforming how the world understands the ocean. The ocean science pioneer is being honored throughout 2017, including in a visit from His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco on Oct. 26.
