The University of California San Diego’s commitment to reducing energy use recently garnered the campus a first place award in the North American Laboratory Freezer Challenge. The nationwide best practice competition encourages laboratories to reduce the environmental and financial costs of ultra-low temperature freezers.

UC San Diego Police Sergeant Manuel “Nel” Garcia and his wife, Leah, were recently commended by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) San Diego County for their volunteer work over the past three years. The couple was recognized for their continued efforts to garner support for the organization by recruiting volunteers from UC San Diego’s Community Service Officer (CSO) program, and by promoting awareness of driving under the influence within UC San Diego communities such as Greek Life on Campus.

UC San Diego will receive two 2017 Energy Efficiency and Sustainability Best Practice Awards for its electric vehicle leasing/charging program and a monitoring-based commissioning project. Anne Artz, a teacher at The Preuss School UCSD, will spend her summer vacation a little differently this year. Approximately one week after she finishes the school year on June 23, Artz will head to Vietnam for a six-week teaching stint as part of the Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Short-Term grant.

On April 19, one department and 11 members of the UC San Diego community were recognized at the 7th Annual Integrity Awards Ceremony for their contributions to academic, research and professional integrity on campus. The awards were hosted by the Academic Integrity Office and Research Ethics Program to honor our university’s commitment to uphold the six pillars of integrity—responsibility, honesty, fairness, respect, trustworthiness and courage.

Throughout the month of April, UC San Diego will recognize Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) as part of the campus’s mission to provide resources, education and support for the prevention of sexual violence. This year’s SAAM theme, “Engaging New Voices,” was established by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center to encourage and inform a wider audience about how to take action and stop sexual violence before it happens.

Chávez Celebration promises to uphold a vibrant tradition of activism, cultural heritage and social justice. The annual campus celebration, which takes place from March to May, commemorates the life and legacy of American farm worker, labor leader and civil rights activist César E. Chávez for his commitment to the rights of underserved community members through nonviolent activism.

As part the University of California San Diego’s continued outreach efforts to high schools across San Diego and the state, staff and leadership from campus including Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Juan González will travel to Madison High Feb. 21 and Chula Vista High Feb. 23 to deliver the message that a UC education is within reach. As a first-generation college student, González knows the important role education plays in enhancing the future of young students.

The Sustainability Office student ambassador has been selected to participate in the Principal Community Scholar Program, a prestigious opportunity to lead a campus community service project and receive a $1,000 scholarship.
