The University of California, San Diego Moores Cancer Center will host the 8th annual Survivor Beach on Sunday, June 15 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa in Mission Bay. The event will culminate Cancer Survivor Week, a week-long series of annual special events hosted by Moores Cancer Center. Survivor Beach will feature a beach festival, barbeque, live music, stand-up paddleboard (SUP) competitions for all skill levels and ages, and a paddle out for cancer survivors. Hundreds of community members are expected to gather for the day-long event in solidarity with and celebration of survivors and their caregivers.

UC San Diego opened its doors to thousands of newly admitted transfer students and their families on campus Saturday for Transfer Triton Day. In the same tradition as Triton Day, which is targeted toward admitted freshmen, Transfer Triton Day brought together the entire campus community to encourage admitted transfer students to accept their offer of admission to UC San Diego for fall 2014.

Two student groups are partnering on an initiative to increase the variety of Kosher and Halal food options in campus dining halls. The joint initiative by the Union of Jewish Students and the Muslim Student Association has been in the works for about a year.

Elizabeth Kim, Joshua Young Yang and Maarouf Saad are the University of California, San Diego’s latest undergraduate students to be acknowledged with the national Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program Award for their research in the sciences. Kim and Yang were selected to receive the scholarship—regarded as the nation’s most prestigious award bestowed upon students studying the sciences—and will each receive $7,500. Saad was awarded with an honorable mention for his contributions as well.

UC San Diego is offering “College Prep For Future Tritons,” a free event on campus for middle and high school students and their families to learn how to plan for, get into and pay for college. Emphasizing that it’s never too early to think about college, the Saturday, April 5 event offers information about the college prep necessary so that qualified students who want to go to college can, regardless of income or ethnicity.
