Researchers in UC San Diego's Center for Networked Systems (CNS) will be out in force at the 14th USENIX Symposium on Networked Systems Design and Implementation in March, with four papers, including two co-authored by CNS co-director and CSE professor George Porter.

Visitors to the gallery@calit2 on the University of California San Diego campus will be treated to a mind-expanding yet dystopic art show that asks a simple question: If life started today in our plastic debris-filled oceans, what kinds of life forms would emerge out of the contemporary primordial ooze? The exhibition, “An Ecosystem of Excess”, opens February 2 and runs through March 17.

UC San Diego professor of anthropology Thomas E. Levy, who directs the Qualcomm Institute’s Center for Cyber-Archaeology and Sustainability, spent a week in the Indian state of Telagana visiting 10 ancient sites, including one of the largest groups of ‘standing stones’ thousands of years old. Levy hopes to return with an expedition to document the little-known sites for digital conservation.

The leading computing society in the world, ACM, named UC San Diego computer science and engineering professor Rajesh K. Gupta to be an ACM Fellow. He’s the only University of California professor honored by ACM in the class of 2016.

Composer and multimedia artist Katharina Rosenberger, a professor in the Department of Music at the University of California San Diego, has been appointed composer-in-residence at the Qualcomm Institute (QI), the UC San Diego division of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2). Rosenberger is the fourth UC San Diego music faculty member to hold the position following Roger Reynolds (2007-2010), Rand Steiger (2010-2013) and Lei Liang (2013-2016). Her recent composition, “tempi agitati,” will be performed Thursday, Dec. 8 at UC San Diego’s Conrad Prebys Concert Hall, by the contemporary vocal quartet, Neue Vocalsolisten.

Cheryl Hile, a fund manager at UC San Diego, has embarked on an ambitious effort to become the first patient with multiple sclerosis to run seven marathons on seven continents in a single year, including races in Hawaii this month and Antarctica in January.

Mansi Malik, a second-year graduate student in Computer Science at UC San Diego, was among the 35 UC San Diego students (including nine grad students) and 15,000 people overall attending the 2016 Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing October 19-21 in Houston, TX.
