Joseph L. Reid, professor emeritus of physical oceanography in the Integrative Oceanography Division at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, and renowned expert in ocean circulation, died of natural causes on April 2, 2015, at his home in Del Mar, Calif. He was 92.

Richard H. Rosenblatt, a world-renowned ichthyologist and professor associated with Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, since 1958, died at his home in
San Diego, Calif., on Oct. 30, 2014, from natural causes. He was 83 years old.

Leaders of the Port of San Diego and members of the San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board engaged with scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, this week to set a course for enhanced collaboration among the region’s top environmental entities. The three groups share mutual goals of environmental stewardship, coastal protection and monitoring, and improved ocean water quality, focusing on benefits for society and the environment.

U.S. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced the nation's newest research vessel will be named R/V Sally Ride, in honor of the former UC San Diego faculty member who was the first American female astronaut and the youngest American to fly in space.

Edward A. Frieman, Ph.D., former director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, and a prominent national advisor to the government on issues of vital importance to defense, energy, and science policy, died of a respiratory illness at UC San Diego’s Thornton Hospital in La Jolla, Calif., on April 11, 2013.

This year, for the first time, external funding for sponsored research by scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego exceeds $150 million (excluding ARRA* funding). Such funding arises from innovations and ideas of Scripps scientists and researchers who perform initial exploration of the concepts and compete in rigorous external competitive processes for funding.

Howling winds and pouring rain didn’t deter the crews of sailors and crowds of sailing fans who lined San Diego Bay for the start of the America’s Cup World Series during an unseasonably cool Saturday in mid-November. Clearer skies prevailed and the races took off.
