11th Annual Visual Arts Symposium and Open Studios Explore Issues Shaping Culture Today

The Department of Visual Arts opened its galleries, studios and lecture hall Saturday, giving an inside look into the practice and research of art students at UC San Diego. Held annually, the Graduate Symposium and Open Studios showcase the groundbreaking work of Ph.D. student art historians and MFA artists. Organized by the graduate students themselves, the event gives them the opportunity to share their work with the campus and greater community.

Sound as Social Practice

The University of California San Diego Department of Music is well known for its emphasis on experimental music and sound in composition, performance and scholarship, and brings this to the forefront at a special two-day conference March 2-3. “Sonic Fluidities: An Interdisciplinary Graduate Conference” is the first of its kind at UC San Diego, organized by a committee of current Integrative Studies program students. Through presentations, performances and installations, the inaugural conference uses the metaphor of fluidity to explore the social position of sound and music through time and genre.

Organized by UC San Diego Extension, two Helen Edison Lecture Series events are an official part of the festival, starting Jan. 20 with a hosted discussion on jazz great Charles Mingus’ historical “Tijuana Moods” album. Moderated by Grammy Award-winning jazz author Ashley Kahn, the panel includes Schick and Anthony Davis from the Department of Music, with saxophonist and longstanding Mingus band member Charles McPherson. The discussion precedes two performances of “Mingus Dynasty: Tijuana Moods,” Jan. 21 at CECUT in Tijuana and Jan. 22 at Athenaeum Jazz at The Scripps Research Institute.
