For Transgender Day of Visibility, UC San Diego alumna Hillary Whittington returned to campus as a proud mother of two, PTA volunteer, public speaker—and parent of a transgender child. She and her husband, Jeff, were on campus to discuss Hillary’s new book, “Raising Ryland: Our Story of Parenting a Transgender Child with No Strings Attached.” The memoir tells both the resistance and support Whittington and her family encountered during their child’s transition from female to male.

Though dubbed “Advertising’s New ‘It Girl’” by Adweek, the story behind 28-year-old Vayntrub is one of ambition and audacity coming straight from her days at UC San Diego.

Nearly 3,000 alumni, faculty, staff, students and community members returned to UC San Diego Saturday for the Triton 5K. They joined together to walk, run, volunteer and celebrate all things UC San Diego. The university’s race was part of the annual Alumni Weekend hosted June 5 through 8 by UCSD Alumni. This year, the event raised more than $270,000 for student scholarships, bringing the total amount raised to support undergraduates to $3.9 million since the 5K was established in 1996.

Earlier this fall, UC San Diego was again recognized by the Washington Monthly as the nation’s top “positive impact” college, in rankings that measure research, social mobility and commitment to service. The Washington Monthly editors noted that students at UC San Diego “are taught by example and designed to look beyond themselves and give back.” Two university alumni entrepreneurs just so happen to be giving back through their own businesses—from a coffee roaster, to a designer of dog couture, both Tritons found ways to dream big while still making time for philanthropy.
