Kicking off International Education Week, the University of California, San Diego was ranked 7th in the nation among doctoral institutions for the number of students who study abroad for a full academic year, according to the Institute of International Education (IIE) Open Doors report released yesterday.

Meantime, the project team will process surveys and a mountain of user data collected and stored by the touch table in Osaka to discover patterns in how users picked and ordered the photographs and to find out which were the most and least popular. This information will be used to improve the visitor experience for MOPA’s Fall 2012 exhibition.

For patients who have suffered an ischemic stroke, traditional treatment prescribes keeping subsequent blood pressure levels as low as possible to reduce the risk of another stroke. A new international study, however, suggests this conventional approach may not be helpful, and could actually increase recurrent stroke risk – at least in the first few months after the first event.

When two UC San Diego graduate students set out to create a new mentoring program at the Jacobs School of Engineering that pairs graduate students and undergraduates, they didn’t expect to be flooded with applications. They also didn’t expect the massive turn out at the program’s first meeting this month. But Margie Mathewson and Laura Connelly say they are now expecting the program to keep growing and building an even stronger sense of community at the Jacobs School.

Connie Fey, a programmer analyst in Environmental Health & Safety, was recognized Nov. 7 for her 40 years of service to the university. Fey was one of 507 employees recognized. Together, they’ve put in 7,960 years—or more than 16.6 million hours—of service at UC San Diego, Chancellor Marye Anne Fox pointed out.

“The Storm,” a drama by 19th-century Russian playwright Alexander Ostrovsky, is not a common choice in American regional theatre seasons. But true to its mission of producing innovative and eclectic work, the UC San Diego department of theatre and dance will stage the play Nov. 18 through Dec. 3 in the Sheila and Hughes Potiker Theatre.

The Founders’ Celebration “What R U Doing?” video contest wrapped up last week with a number of outstanding videos capturing life at UC San Diego. We heard from an alumnus who started his own business making custom skateboards, a staff member who does family arts outreach programs, a student who is working on cutting-edge robotics research, and many more creative UC San Diego community members.

UC San Diego’s proud tradition of supporting veterans was embraced Thursday at the twelfth annual Veterans Association Recognition Ceremony. At the event, Chuck Massy, a business officer at RIMAC Arena who formally served in the U.S. Navy, was honored with the Veteran of the Year award for his strong commitment to community service.
