Campus Reaches Out this Holiday Season

On the second Thursday of each month, a group of UC San Diego volunteers meets in the evenings at the Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank to help sort through donations and assemble food packages for San Diego community members in need. Vanessa Pool, project manager at the Qualcomm Institute, the UC San Diego division of Calit2, started the UC San Diego Night at the Food Bank in June 2008.

UC San Diego Guarantees a Pathway for Transfer Students with UniversityLink

The University of California, San Diego has updated its UniversityLink program, providing guaranteed admission for eligible local students to encourage them to attend UC San Diego. New Models Predict Where E. coli Strains Will Thrive

Bioengineers at the University of California, San Diego have used the genomic sequences of 55 E. coli strains to reconstruct the metabolic repertoire for each strain. Surprisingly, these reconstructions do an excellent job of predicting the kind of environment where each strain will thrive, the researchers found.

Blacks Have Less Access to Cancer Specialists, Treatment

Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine say metastatic colorectal cancer patients of African-American descent are less likely to be seen by cancer specialists or receive cancer treatments. This difference in treatment explains a large part of the 15 percent higher mortality experienced by African-American patients than non-Hispanic white patients.

Former Foster Youth Benefit from Sony Technology Packages

Five UC San Diego undergraduate students who are former foster youth and two junior faculty members were awarded a technology package from Sony Electronics, Inc., as part of a nationwide scholarship program during a reception on Nov. 1. Sony has awarded equipment packages annually for the past five years—a total approximate value of $53,000—to help UC San Diego students and faculty achieve their academic and teaching goals.

Campus Community Reaches Out to Help Victims of Typhoon Haiyan

Students in the Kaibigang Pilipin@ student organization have joined together to help victims of the Haiyan Typhoon in the Philippines. Yesterday, Kaibigang Pilipin@ (KP) org members tabled on Library Walk to collect donations that included canned food and clothing. In addition, the students placed a donation bin in the Cross Cultural Center to collect items such as wound care materials, mosquito repellent, infant formula and blankets.

UC San Diego Shake Table, Robot Win Best of What’s New Award from Popular Science

The biggest outdoor shake table in the world and a robot designed to move along utility lines have received Best of What’s New awards from Popular Science, the world’s largest science and technology magazine. The two projects are featured in the magazine’s December issue, now on newsstands.
