January 13, 2015 — UC San Diego School of Medicine was today named one of the nation’s top residency training programs in 10 specialties by Doximity. The Doximity report included more than 50,000 peer nominations from board-certified US physicians, and evaluated 3,691 residency training programs across 20 specialties.

January 12, 2015 — A new method that creates large-area patterns of three-dimensional nanoshapes from metal sheets represents a potential manufacturing system to inexpensively mass produce innovations such as "plasmonic metamaterials" for advanced technologies.

January 12, 2015 — Pieter Dorrestein, PhD, has been selected to receive the 2015 John Jacob Abel Award in Pharmacology by the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET). Dorrestein is a professor of pharmacology, chemistry and biochemistry in the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of California, San Diego.

January 12, 2015 — The University of California, San Diego has received a record 94,200 freshman and transfer applications for fall 2015. The university had the third highest number of applicants among the University of California campuses. Within the last decade, UC San Diego has consistently been one of the nation’s top five universities to receive the most applications.

At the same time, citizens from these nations are fleeing their countries of origin to the United States, confronting new forms of violence from migration officials, gangs and eventually, if apprehended, the U.S. state.

January 8, 2015 — A leading expert on microbiomes and bioinformatics, Rob Knight will be devoting some of his time to doing collaborative research in the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department at the University of California, San Diego’s Jacobs School of Engineering. The department confirmed Knight’s joint appointment in CSE as a Faculty Affiliate, following the Jan. 5 announcement from the UC San Diego School of Medicine that Knight has joined that school’s faculty as a professor in the Department of Pediatrics. The CSE appointment was effective Jan. 1, 2015.

January 8, 2015 — As a young boy growing up in Hong Kong, Tsz Fung Kwan looked forward to reading the famous Jim Davis comic strip Garfield in the Sunday paper. Something about the iconic orange, lasagna-loving cat struck a chord with Kwan, and, at the age of 7, when his family immigrated to the United states in search of a better life, he paid homage to his comic hero by choosing “Garfield” as his new American name.

January 8, 2015 — A breakthrough today was a crazy idea yesterday. That’s a line from a new film project that documents a student-driven effort at UC San Diego and research institutions across the Torrey Pines Mesa to encourage students to turn ideas and breakthroughs into startup companies. The short documentary film was produced and directed by Rajesh Grover, an assistant professor at The Scripps Research Institute and a visiting investigator at the J. Craig Venter Institute in La Jolla, and Kenan Azam, a data scientist in the laboratory of UC San Diego bioengineering professor Shankar Subramaniam. Both are former leaders of the UC San Diego Entrepreneur Challenge for the 2011-12 academic year.

But if you give her a blank look at the mere mention of “polymers,” she might quickly change that to say she’s a “construction worker… on the nano scale” or a “plastics chemist,” the term she used to introduce herself at the recent Falling Walls conference in Berlin.
