Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, has named Scripps alumna Deborah Zmarzly, Ph.D., as interim director. Zmarzly has been with Birch Aquarium since 1993, devoting more than 20 years to making science accessible and interpreting Scripps research for the public.

UC San Diego’s Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies (USMEX) played host to an official stop on the International Diaspora Engagement Alliance’s tour Oct. 13. The stop was one of 65 events the Alliance held around the world dedicated to diaspora communities and their contributions to global development as part of Global Diaspora Week, Oct. 12 to 18.

Students at UC system campuses, including UC San Diego, are working to prevent sexual violence on college campuses. Earlier this year, the University of California Student Association (UCSA) launched an awareness campaign entitled “UConsent,” focused on the importance of consent in sexual activity through a three-pronged approach: awareness, education and advocacy.

To support UC San Diego’s commitment to increase the diversity of graduate students, a coalition of campus programs debuted an enhanced recruiting presence at the Society for Advancement of Hispanics/Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) national conference in Los Angeles Oct. 16-18. The largest STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) diversity event in the country, the 2014 conference brought together more than 3,800 students and science professionals of color for a weekend of cutting-edge science, mentoring, networking and professional development.

Philosophers are also notorious for talking more than doing. Not so much at UC San Diego, where faculty and students are actively working to change the numbers for the better.

In Southeastern San Diego, local residents are transforming a 20,000-square-foot vacant urban lot into a community focal point for healthy place making. Formerly a food desert—a city area that lacks supermarkets or farmers markets—the Ocean View Growing Grounds offers a gathering place for people to grow food, socialize with their neighbors and hold events.
