UC San Diego is home to approximately 300 student veterans, a population estimated to be higher than any other UC campus. Providing support to student veterans is a proud UC San Diego tradition, and this year the campus is launching new initiatives to provide more tools for veterans to succeed academically.

This isn’t a UC San Diego classroom or even a traditional tutoring session; it is a Supplemental Instruction pilot program where students teach students, launched this fall under the Teaching + Learning Commons.

The agreement formalizes an already strong collaboration focusing on the intersection of electric vehicles and energy storage.

Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine developed a method to expand the types of chromosomal abnormalities that noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) can detect. The study, published November 9 by Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, uses a semiconductor sequencing platform to identify small chromosomal deletions or duplications, such as occur in Cri du Chat Syndrome and DiGeorge Syndrome, with a simple blood test from the expectant mother.

An international team of researchers developed a method that identifies up to twice as many proteins and peptides in mass spectrometry data than conventional approaches. The method can be applied to a range of fields, including clinical settings and fundamental biology research for cancer and other diseases. The key to the new method’s improved performance is its ability to compare data to so-called spectral libraries--essentially a pattern-matching exercise--rather than individual spectra or a database of sequences.

Such was the case during a recent visit to UC San Diego’s Department of Theatre and Dance by long-time educator and arts supporter Lois Chant. Her $1.25 million legacy gift will boost the department’s efforts to continue its top-ranked theater training program.
