Early architects at the University of California, San Diego dreamed of a monumental campus. A grandiose amphitheater and bell tower were to dominate the center of campus and each of the six colleges would feature expansive plazas connected by grand promenades. After the construction of Revelle College, public spaces evolved into more intimate campus neighborhoods with organic corridors that invited interaction. Today, campus architects are careful stewards of the land, incorporating sustainable building practices that channel the surrounding ocean bluffs, canyon valleys and eucalyptus groves.

Scott Makeig, research scientist and director of the Swartz Center for Computational Neuroscience at the Institute for Neural Computation of UC San Diego, has brought together a research group from four UC campuses who have won a $300,000 President’s Research Catalyst Award, one of five such awards across the UC system announced by President Janet Napolitano.

Thomas Savides, MD has been named as the first Chief Experience Officer at UC San Diego Health System. In the newly created role, Savides will be responsible for the strategy, leadership and implementation of the plan to improve the total health care experience of patients, families, providers and staff.

The bacterium Salmonella Typhi causes typhoid fever in humans, but leaves other mammals unaffected. Researchers at University of California, San Diego and Yale University Schools of Medicine now offer one explanation — CMAH, an enzyme that humans lack. Without this enzyme, a toxin deployed by the bacteria is much better able to bind and enter human cells, making us sick.

In the mid-1990s, a shrinking number of students from underrepresented groups and an increasingly hostile state and national climate to people of color strained race relations at the University of California, San Diego. Through protest, signature gathering and teach-ins, students from the Student Affirmative Action Coalition (SAAC) along with concerned faculty and staff called for the establishment of a center that would support the concerns of underrepresented and underserved students while at the same time build campus engagement for diversity and social justice issues.

Marvin L. "Murph" Goldberger, an emeritus professor of physics who was dean of UC San Diego’s Division of Natural Sciences from 1994 to 1999, following a prominent career that included working on the Manhattan Project and serving as the president of Caltech, died Nov. 26 in La Jolla. He was 92.

It’s Wednesday afternoon, and about a dozen students are hard at work trying to make history in the basement of Jacobs Hall. The students are building a 20-foot, two-stage rocket that they hope will make UC San Diego the first higher education institution to successfully send a rocket into space.

UC San Diego joined more than 100 countries across the globe in celebrating the world’s cultures, peoples and languages for International Education Week (IEW), Nov. 17 to 21. The week of events allowed students to participate in performances about their heritages, view an international film festival and compete in UC San Diego’s very own “Triton World Cup” soccer match.
