The University of California, San Diego campus is making preparations for its annual birthday party to celebrate one of the campus’s most beloved luminaries, Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. The fantastically creative children’s book author’s 112th birthday celebration coincides with national Read Across America Day and comes on the heels of the UC San Diego Library’s recent announcement to name its new café in honor of the author’s wife, Audrey Geisel.

A new cyber-archaeology research center in the Qualcomm Institute at UC San Diego has received data on 18,500 archaeological sites under a new partnership between the center and the Israel Antiques Authority.

This month’s announcement by the National Science Foundation that scientists for the first time detected gravitational waves in the universe as hypothesized by Albert Einstein 100 years ago has opened up a new era of exploration for astronomers and astrophysicists. The NSF-funded Comet supercomputer at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at the University of California, San Diego, which went into operation in May 2015, was one of several high-performance computers used by researchers to help confirm that landmark discovery before a formal announcement was made.

Cancer immunology is based upon boosting the body’s own immune system to vanquish malignancies. It is among the fastest growing areas of oncology research. Researchers at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center have launched three clinical trials to test the safety and efficacy of a novel cellular-immunotherapy that uses modified T cells – one of the immune system’s primary weapons – to treat three different types of blood cancer that often defy existing therapies.

New research finds there is a distinct sound coming from a massive community of fish, shrimp, jellies, and squid as they travel up and down from the depths of the ocean to the water’s surface to feed. This sound could be serving as a “dinner bell” for these deep-water organisms that play a key role in ocean food webs and the global carbon cycle, and could help scientists better understand this mysterious ecosystem, according to new research presented this week at the 2016 Ocean Science Meeting in New Orleans.
