The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), the Simons Foundation, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation today named University of California San Diego Molecular Biology Professor Gürol Süel an HHMI-Simons Faculty Scholar. Süel will receive a total of $1.5 million over five years in support of his studies on how bacterial cells communicate with each other via electrical signals, similar to the way neurons transmit messages in the brain.

The Chancellor’s Community Advisory Board at the University of California San Diego is composed of 27 local leaders and professionals who work to foster and strengthen positive relationships between the campus and community. A new chair and six new members have joined the 2016-17 board.

The University of California San Diego welcomed its most diverse incoming class of freshmen and transfer students on Sept. 22 with additional resources that support diversity, inclusivity and student success. The new initiatives include identity-themed housing for LGBTQ, black and Latino students and a mentoring program for students who come from under-resourced high schools and/or are the first in their family to attend college, among other programs.

The University of California San Diego will host over 1,000 students at SD Hacks 2016 for 36 hours of technological collaboration. This will be the second time SD Hacks will take place at UC San Diego. The student-led hackathon is one of the largest in California, along with those of UC Berkeley and UCLA. After a successful inaugural hackathon in 2015, thousands of students from all over the world have applied to attend this year’s event.

University of California researchers to hold meeting in San Diego to discuss hematologic malignancies as part of the University of California Hematologic Malignancies Consortium, a first-of-its-kind research group that brings together the five UC health campuses conducting clinical studies for cancer patients. The consortium currently has four additional clinical trials planned for 2017.

Loneliness is linked to poor physical and mental health, and is an even more accurate predictor of early death than obesity. To better understand who is at risk, researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine conducted the first genome-wide association study for loneliness — as a life-long trait, not a temporary state. They discovered that risk for feeling lonely is partially due to genetics, but environment plays a bigger role.

California Governor Edmund “Jerry” Brown signed into law today new state restrictions on the emissions of so-called short-lived climate pollutants such as methane, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) used in refrigeration, and soot and other forms of black carbon. The new law was inspired by decades of research by Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego Climate and Atmospheric Scientist Veerabhadran Ramanathan.

If you’ve lived through your own or your kids’ adolescence, you know it’s an extraordinary time. Yet researchers know comparatively little about the teenage brain. The Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study – by the National Institutes of Health, with leadership from the University of California San Diego – aims to change that. The largest long-term study of brain development and child health in the United States is now underway.
