The great migration surge of Mexico-born workers crossing into the U.S. is over—and will remain this way for years to come. Instead, the new migration hot spot will be workers moving from Northern Africa into Europe.

A new program at UC San Diego called Hacking for Defense gives students opportunities to leverage the culture of rapid innovation to address national security challenges. UC San Diego students worked in teams on real-world problems identified by the U.S. Navy: humanitarian assistance involving robots and defense against underwater vehicle swarms.

Karthik Muralidharan joined UC San Diego’s Department of Economics in 2008, after earning his Ph.D. at Harvard University. An affiliate of several prominent research organizations, he recently accepted an invitation to serve as an honorary advisor to the National Institution for Transforming India, an initiative of the Indian federal government. He will be working with the secretaries of education in the Indian states.

Researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine have shown that ustekinumab, a human antibody used to treat arthritis, significantly induces response and remission in patients with moderate to severe Crohn’s disease. Results of the clinical trial will appear in the November 16 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

The Institute of Arts and Humanities (IAH) and the CaliBaja Center for Resilient Materials and Systems are hosting their first scholarship fundraiser for UC San Diego Latina/o students. The “Exhibit and Sale of Mexican Fine Art and Folk Art” takes place at the Great Hall in the International House on campus, Nov. 19 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Nov. 20 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Event organizers, Luis Alvarez, director of the IAH, and Olivia A. Graeve, professor of mechanics and materials at the Jacobs School of Engineering, hope to raise $30,000 in support of student scholarships.

A new bioinformatic framework developed by researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine has identified key proteins significantly altered at the gene-expression level in biopsied tissue from patients with diabetic kidney disease, a result that may reveal new therapeutic targets.
