October 16, 2018 — The Health Cyberinfrastructure (CI) Division of the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at the University of California San Diego has partnered with the University of Rhode Island (URI) to provide an environment to protect a variety of data for researchers and PIs across the URI campus.

October 16, 2018 — Researchers from University of California San Diego School of Medicine, with statewide collaborators, report that patients who recorded videos of themselves taking tuberculosis (TB) medications better adhered to treatment than patients who were observed in-person.

October 16, 2018 — A consortium of nine University of California (UC), including UC San Diego, and 15 California State University (CSU) campuses recently received a five-year, $5 million grant from the National Science Foundation to dramatically increase diversity in physics and astronomy through the Cal-Bridge program. Launched four years ago, Cal-Bridge creates a pathway for underrepresented minority (URM) students from multiple CSU campuses to attend PhD programs in physics and astronomy at UCs across the state. The new NSF grant allows Cal-Bridge to expand from about a dozen URM scholars per year, to as many as 50 statewide, who will benefit from substantial financial support, research opportunities and various workshops.

October 15, 2018 — The University of California San Diego was awarded $10.5 million over five years from the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) to create one of four new centers of excellence. The Center for Matters under Extreme Pressure (CMEC) will be the third NNSA center focused on high energy density science.

October 15, 2018 — The campaign platform of Mexico’s President-elect Andres Manuel López Obrador included vows to end corruption in the Mexican government and drive out the political mafia running the country. As López Obrador’s Dec. 1 inauguration nears, his anti-corruption strategy continues to take shape. On Oct. 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the UC San Diego’s School of Global Policy and Strategy Center for U.S-Mexican Studies will host a conference, discussing the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for López Obrador’s administration.

October 15, 2018 — A new series of public events has been organized by the Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute bringing leading-edge research into classrooms, research labs, industry and the community. Topics will range from improving human health to fish, and how applying more effective data techniques aids ocean ecology. The cross-discipline topics demonstrate the wide diversity of subjects benefitting from data science technology advances.

October 15, 2018 — Lucila Ohno-Machado, MD, PhD, chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics at UC San Diego Health, professor of medicine and associate dean for informatics and technology at the School of Medicine, and a founding faculty member of UC San Diego Halicioğlu Data Science Institute, has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM).

October 12, 2018 — Tamara Strauss has been living with high-grade, stage IV pancreatic neuroendocrine cancer for more than three years. Current treatments, although effective for her, are highly toxic. Tamara enrolled in a first-of-its-kind, pilot study at Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health to test a personalized vaccine using her unique cancer mutations to boost an anti-tumor immune response.

October 11, 2018 — The American Physical Society (APS) recently announced its 2018 fellowship class with a 77 percent increase in the number of women compared to last year’s class. According to the APS, this is the most women elected as fellows since tracking the number of females nominated and elected began in 2015, when just 13 percent of fellows were women.
