New research shows for the first time how the changing climate in Asia, from 5,000 to 1,000 years ago, transformed people’s ability to produce food in particular places. The Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute at UC-San Diego has announced the appointment of Bradley Voytek, a Cognitive Science associate professor with a strong following in science-related social media, as a Faculty Fellow of the pioneering institute. Voytek works with students in Cognitive Science, Neuroscience and Data Science, and is a leader of the neuroscience graduate program as well as the HDSI undergraduate fellowship program.

The University of California San Diego has been named the nation’s fifth best public university, according to U.S. News and World’s Report’s Best Global Universities. The new list measures factors such as research, global and regional reputation; international collaboration; as well as the number of highly-cited papers and doctorates awarded. Overall, UC San Diego was named the 17th best university in the world.

Biologists at UC San Diego have discovered a new way of re-sensitizing drug-resistant human tumor cells to the potency of DNA-damaging agents, the most widely used group of cancer drugs. In a new study, they describe how a human gene known as Schlafen 11 controls the sensitivity of tumor cells to DDAs. Their research may pave the way to new strategies to overcome chemotherapeutic drug resistance.
