The San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at the University of California San Diego has received two key HPCwire annual awards for 2018, recognizing the use of its Comet supercomputer in assisting scientists in finding the first evidence of a source of high-energy cosmic neutrinos, and for Comet’s role in a recent autism study led by a team of researchers at the university’s School of Medicine.

UC San Diego’s Visitors Tour Program offers free tours to local residents, new faculty and staff, first-time visitors and the general public. These Sunday afternoon tours are led by knowledgeable adult volunteer guides. Walking tours are conducted the first Sunday of every month, while tours are by bus for the remaining Sundays of the month.

Drugged driving has joined drunk driving and distracted driving as a leading cause of motor vehicle collisions. As roadway safety remains a pressing public health concern in California, researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine and the Qualcomm Institute have received funding to expand a statewide program known as Training, Research, and Education for Driving Safety (TREDS).

Researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and international collaborators have evidence that Kawasaki Disease (KD) does not have a single cause. By studying weather patterns and geographical distributions of patients in San Diego, the research team determined that this inflammatory disease likely has multiple environmental triggers influenced by a combination of temperature, precipitation and wind patterns.

An organic chemist who specializes in synthesis, catalysis and developing experimental methods, Valerie Schmidt, an assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry at UC San Diego, recently published an article in the Journal of the American Chemical Society outlining her team’s work on developing a new, low-cost method for chemical syntheses involving the use of ammonia.

Exactly 80 years after Thornton Wilder premiered his stage classic “Our Town,” the UC San Diego Department of Theatre and Dance is set to give it a modern makeover. The Pulitzer Prize-winning drama is one of three productions for fall quarter from the famed department, ranked fourth in the world for its MFA acting program and named a top five undergraduate drama program to launch an acting career.
