Catherine M. Robertson, MD, has been named chief of Sports Medicine at UC San Diego Health. Robertson, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in treating injuries of the shoulder, knee and hip, will further enhance UC San Diego Health’s reputation for customizing innovative, evidenced-based care for all athletes — from the weekend warrior to elite, professional and Olympic athletes.

Organized by UC San Diego Extension, two Helen Edison Lecture Series events are an official part of the festival, starting Jan. 20 with a hosted discussion on jazz great Charles Mingus’ historical “Tijuana Moods” album. Moderated by Grammy Award-winning jazz author Ashley Kahn, the panel includes Schick and Anthony Davis from the Department of Music, with saxophonist and longstanding Mingus band member Charles McPherson. The discussion precedes two performances of “Mingus Dynasty: Tijuana Moods,” Jan. 21 at CECUT in Tijuana and Jan. 22 at Athenaeum Jazz at The Scripps Research Institute.

Four grand pianos. Four jazz pianists who have performed with the likes of Miles Davis and Ella Fitzgerald. The University of California San Diego’s 22nd Annual Lytle Scholarship Concert will feature a unique solo improvisation set from visionary musicians Cecil Lytle, Kei Akagi, Mike Wofford and Tobin Chodos, capped off by a show-stopping finale that merges the talents of all four performers. The campus and local community are invited to the concert, entitled “Jazz Piano Summit,” on Sunday, Jan. 28. All proceeds will benefit undergraduate scholarships at UC San Diego.

Twenty-five years ago, Sean and Mihi McNanie anxiously watched their premature baby fight for her life. Shea was born at just 25 weeks gestation—she weighed less than two pounds. She was kept alive, in critical condition, by machines, medications and a dedicated staff at UC San Diego Medical Center’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). She required round-the-clock care for three and a half months.
