UC San Diego’s Triton Days Provide Warm Welcome Prospective Students

From exploring Stuart Collection artwork throughout campus to experiencing technology that allows users to simulate surfing on dry land—Triton Days offer newly admitted students myriad opportunities to experience UC San Diego’s vibrant community and vast resources. This year, Triton Day for undergraduate students is taking place April 9, while Transfer Triton Day will occur on May 7. Each event will offer a full day of demonstrations and activities for admitted students and their families to enjoy. The campus expects nearly 24,000 visitors during Triton Days.

Hundreds of campus volunteers, including representatives from the undergraduate colleges, academic departments and programs, student support services, student organizations and extracurricular/enrichment programs, play an important role in ensuring a memorable first impression during Triton Days. The objective of Triton Days is to showcase all that UC San Diego has to offer, inspiring students to sign their Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) and choosing UC San Diego as their academic home. During the April 9 Triton Day, undergraduate students will have the opportunity to commit to UC San Diego by submitting their SIR at a tent located on Town Square sponsored by Microsoft that will also showcase the company’s latest devices and technology in education.

“Triton Days offer our newly-admitted students the opportunity to explore the vibrant and supportive UC San Diego community,” said Juan González, vice chancellor for Student Affairs. “Students will have access to our amazing faculty, labs and research spaces for which we are top-ranked, as well as to the tailored support services of our unique college system and campus community centers.” Included in the resources shared with admitted students and their families at Triton Days will be four new cutting-edge engaged learning tools launched by the Teaching + Learning Commons. UC San Diego is one of the first universities in the country to offer these tools that not only engage students, but provide experiential learning opportunities to help develop important transferable skills that employers look for when interviewing candidates.

• Research Experience and Applied Learning (REAL) Portal: This portal allows students to search for internships, research opportunities, public service opportunities, international experiences and other activities. They can also create profiles so that organizations can search the portal for students who meet their criteria.
• Co-Curricular Record (CCR): An official record, this provides an opportunity to receive formal recognition for leadership and volunteer activities on campus. It allows students to capture co-curricular activities and experiential learning experiences that can be shared with potential employers as well as graduate schools and professional schools.
• Enhanced Electronic Transcript: This redesigned online academic record allows students and reviewers to access broader contextual information about courses. Available information includes course description, instructor information and grade distribution where applicable.
• E-Portfolio: Students can now visually tell their academic and professional story by highlighting the work they have completed and activities in which they have been involved. Examples of work are included in an online format to supplement a student’s resume and LinkedIn profile.

In addition to Triton Days, volunteers are also needed for the Triton 5K event which will take place April 10, the Sunday after Triton Day. For more details about volunteering for these events, go to: volunteer50.
