Statement from UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla
The University of California, San Diego strives to maintain the highest standards in education, research and service. This commitment to excellence includes our athletics programs. We regret that contrary to our expectations, rules violations occurred in our women’s crew program.
Immediately upon discovery of potential violations, UC San Diego took action. A thorough investigation was conducted and we self-reported the infractions to the NCAA. Appropriate punitive and corrective actions were immediately taken, including the termination of the coach responsible for the violations.
The University worked closely with the NCAA throughout the overall process, and we fully accept the Committee’s decision of one year of probation, a fine of $2,500 and a decision to vacate the records for the affected women’s crew seasons.
We have instituted additional checks and balances to ensure adherence to NCAA rules, and will be better as a result of the steps taken to ensure a situation of this nature does not occur again. Some of our changes include amending the reporting structure for spring sport supervision in order to enhance monitoring and ensure compliance, as well as adding bystander intervention education for our assistant coaches and student-athletes.
We will continue to take proactive steps to ensure that our athletics department operates within the framework of NCAA rules and UC San Diego’s high standards and expectations.
