Ready to Win? Founders Celebration Contests Offer Prizes to Campus Community

Image

How well do you know UC San Diego? As part of Founders Celebration 2014, members of the campus community will have the chance to test their knowledge and win prizes with a Facebook trivia contest taking place Oct. 27 through Nov. 14. The trivia competition is one of two social media contests held this year for Founders Celebration.

In the next few weeks, trivia questions will be posted periodically to the UC San Diego Life Facebook page. UC San Diego students, staff, faculty, alumni and campus friends are invited to participate by providing their answer to the question in the comments section of the post. Trivia participants can brush up on their Triton knowledge and gain an edge in the contest by visiting the Campus Profile.

The first to answer correctly will win one of 15 $25 gift cards to Home Plate, Porter’s Pub or Perks. For those savvy with a smartphone camera, a photo contest will be held Nov. 13-14. Campus community members are encouraged to take a photo of themselves and their friends at any of the Founders Celebration events—Founders Symposium, Founders Day or Hullabaloo—and share it on Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #ucsdfounders to enter a drawing for one of seven $75 gift cards to Zanzibar at The Loft or the UC San Diego Bookstore.

“The social media contests are another way that we are encouraging the campus community to participate in Founders Celebration,” said Stacee Groff, events manager with Special Events and Protocol. “We want to make sure there is something for everyone during the festivities, whether you are most interested in campus history, learning about cutting-edge UC San Diego research or simply taking time to connect with the UC San Diego community. Founders Celebration is about honoring our campus community and collective achievements.”

Both the trivia and photo contest are open to UC San Diego students, staff, faculty, alumni and campus friends. More information about the contests, as well as the official rules, is available on the Founders Celebration website.

This year’s Founders Celebration activities pay tribute to the curiosity and passion that have allowed the campus to transform the world. The following events will take place Nov. 13-15:

Founders Symposium: Short talks by extraordinary minds

Reception: 4-5 p.m., Nov. 13, The Loft
Symposium: 5-7 p.m., Nov. 13, Price Center East Ballroom

Find out how research happening at UC San Diego translates into real-world benefits. At Founders Symposium, six faculty experts will present short talks on climate change and personalized medicine. Prior to the talks, a reception will showcase current undergraduates who are working to address issues such as poverty, health, education and the environment. Both the reception and symposium are free and open to the public.

Through Their Eyes: A conversation with our chancellors

11:30 a.m., Nov. 14, Price Center East Ballroom

Richard C. Atkinson, Robert C. Dynes, Marye Anne Fox and Pradeep K. Khosla—UC San Diego’s fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth chancellors—will convene for a candid conversation about the evolution of the UC San Diego campus through their eyes. The talk is free and open to the public.

Founders Day Festival: What wonder will you find at the World’s Fair?

Noon-2 p.m., Nov. 14, Town Square

Entertainers, tasty treats and interactive booths will create an atmosphere reminiscent of the World’s Fair in the heart of campus. Exhibits, games and giveaways from campus groups such as the UC San Diego Library, Jacobs School of Engineering and others will showcase campus discoveries and achievements. Connect with friends and colleagues at the free festival, open to the campus and local community.

Hullabaloo: Eat, play, dance

8 p.m.-midnight, Nov. 14, Town Square and Matthews Quad

A festival organized by A.S. Concerts and Events, Hullabaloo features amusement rides, live entertainment, interactive booths and free food. Current undergraduates are invited to eat, play and dance at this student-only Founders Celebration event. Attendees must have a valid student ID.
