This story appears in the spring 2025 issue of UC San Diego Magazine as “Campus Legacy.”

In April, Chancellors Emeriti Robert C. Dynes and Richard Atkinson met with Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla to say goodbye to the Chancellor’s Complex, a series of eleven low buildings located between Price Center and Center Hall. Designed by architect Russell Forester in 1964, the simple, unassuming cubic structures made of wood and glass have been witness to UC San Diego history, from student protests to occupations and movements of great progress. “As we bid farewell to the Chancellor’s Complex, we honor its legacy as a hub for generations of students, faculty and staff,” says Khosla. “All eight chancellors have utilized this office, gathering around the same conference table where historically significant decisions were made.”

In its place, the new Triton Center is taking shape. The four-building, 332,000-square-foot complex will serve as a vibrant gateway to campus, featuring the Triton Alumni and Welcome Center; the Student Success Building; the Triton Health and Well-Being Building; and The Strauss, an innovative art gallery, as well as a Celebration Space and an expansive outdoor plaza for community gatherings. “As we make way for Triton Center, we acknowledge the complex’s profound impact and look forward to writing the next chapter in our university’s story, building on the strong foundation laid by those who came before us,” says Khosla. The chancellor’s office will be housed in the new Student Success Building. Triton Center is slated to open in 2026.
