UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla has announced the hiring of college sports veteran Andy Fee as the Tritons' new Director of Athletics. Fee will become just the fourth Director of Athletics at UC San Diego since 1966.
"UC San Diego is excited to welcome Andy Fee, a seasoned leader in college sports, as our new Director of Athletics," said Khosla. "Andy's proven commitment to fostering excellence in both academics and athletics aligns perfectly with our university's values. I have no doubt he will propel our nationally recognized Division I athletics program to even greater successes. Go Tritons!"
Fee spent two years at Washington as Deputy AD and Chief of Staff. At UW, Fee oversaw sport administration and strategic initiatives, medical services, student athlete wellness and strength and conditioning. He managed the Huskies' partnership with Learfield Sports Properties, assisted the fundraising for the new men's and women's basketball practice facility, partnered on expanding NIL opportunities and led Washington's transition team to the Big Ten Conference.
Fee served as the primary sport administrator for UW men's basketball and women's and men's rowing, the latter of which won the 2024 National Championship. He also oversaw the department's $150M+ budget while serving 14 months as Acting Athletic Department CFO.
Before relocating to Seattle, Fee spent five years as Director of Athletics at Long Beach State from 2017 to 2022. During this time, Long Beach State's athletic programs found great success as the school advanced to the postseason in 18 of its 19 sports programs in his five-year tenure. The Beach won a pair of national championships in men's volleyball and claimed The Big West Commissioner's Cup three times.
Prior to Long Beach State, Fee served in leadership roles at UC Santa Barbara, University of San Diego and Arizona State. He also served as the Chair of both the NCAA Men's Water Polo Committee and NCAA Water Polo Rules Committee from 2018-2022.
"I am honored and excited to join UC San Diego as Athletics Director during such a dynamic time for Triton athletics," Fee said. "I want to thank Chancellor Khosla and Vice Chancellor Satterlund for their confidence in me and for their unwavering support of scholar-athletes and athletics at UC San Diego. Under the Chancellor's leadership, this university has built something truly special – a Division I program that competes at a championship level while maintaining the academic excellence that defines this institution. Our goal is clear: make UC San Diego the top D1-AAA athletic department in America, with basketball leading the charge and deepening our connections with the campus and San Diego community. I look forward to working with our outstanding coaches, staff, scholar-athletes, and partners to write the next exciting chapter of Triton athletics."
Fee takes over a UC San Diego program that recently completed its transition from NCAA Division II to Division I. The Tritons made NCAA history in March, becoming the first program ever to qualify both its men's and women's basketball teams for the NCAA Tournament in its first season with Division I postseason eligibility. Twenty of UC San Diego's 24 sport programs participated in postseason competition this past season, and UC San Diego teams have captured four conference titles since beginning the transition to Division I. Academically, UC San Diego's federal graduation rate is the highest among public institutions in NCAA Division I or II.
In addition, UC San Diego will begin competing in the West Coast Conference in 2027-28. Fee is no stranger to conference transition. He helped guide Washington into the Big Ten and has spent the last year as Deputy Athletic Director for Seattle U – an institution that just made its own transition to the West Coast Conference in July. While in Seattle, Fee has coordinated the day-to-day operations for the Redhawks' 19-sport program and managed revenue generation units, capital projects, the business office and sport programs.
Fee will begin his new role at UC San Diego on Sept. 15 and will be on-campus in La Jolla full-time beginning next month. He and his wife Nicole will relocate to the San Diego area.
