Slideshow Description
Shiley Eye Institute at UC San Diego Health recently unveiled plans for a newly expanded and enhanced facility at a gathering with UC San Diego leadership and one of the institute’s namesakes and local philanthropist, Darlene Shiley.
Guests were invited to see some of the renderings and hear from the physician-scientists who will leverage the space to provide leading-edge care and innovate new therapies for vision diseases and disorders. It was also a chance to recognize Darlene, as well as her late husband Donald Shiley, for their sustained commitment to transformative eye care in San Diego.
Last year, the campus announced a $10 million philanthropic gift from Darlene Shiley that will finance the expansion of the clinical space and function of the institute. The updates are designed to usher in a new era of vision care and research benefiting people in San Diego and beyond thanks to increased patient care capacity and expanded research infrastructure. Including this most recent gift, the Shiley family has donated more than $20 million for various clinical improvements, equipment, research and funding for faculty endowed chairs.
