In another example of community partnerships creating once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for scholars, The Preuss School UC San Diego hosted a soccer camp with legends from Manchester United Football Club on July 30 in collaboration with Qualcomm Inc.

The world-renowned team from Manchester, England, which holds a record 20 English League titles, sent Andy Cole, the fourth highest goal scorer in Premier League history, and Denis Irwin, Manchester United’s second-most decorated player, to The Preuss School to train 32 players from its high school soccer program.

“The Manchester United professionals showed Preuss scholars ways to be successful on and off the field,” said Helen V. Griffith, superintendent of The Preuss School. “I’m confident that the life lessons learned during the camp will translate into lasting memories and inspiration for their bright futures.”

Courtesy of Qualcomm, Preuss scholars who participated in the soccer camp also received tickets to the July 31 Manchester United vs. Real Betis game at Snapdragon Stadium, in which the international powerhouses faced off in front of an enthusiastic San Diego crowd. Qualcomm is a longstanding and essential partner of The Preuss School. The company has supported its STEM and robotics programming, provided personal computers to students during the COVID-19 pandemic, and its employees have served as Preuss board members, tutors and mentors.
