The World Design Capital San Diego Tijuana 2024 concluded with a vibrant celebration of creativity, collaboration and community at UC San Diego's Epstein Family Amphitheater on Nov. 16. This immersive convocation and closing ceremony marked the culmination of a year filled with diverse events and exhibitions across San Diego and Tijuana, showcasing both cities as global hubs for design.
The World Design Capital (WDC) designation, awarded by the World Design Organization, recognizes cities that use design to enhance the lives of their residents. For the first time, two cities—San Diego and Tijuana—were jointly selected for their rich history, vibrant culture and commitment to cross-border collaboration.
With reflections from leaders and dynamic performances, the evening celebrated the many partners who helped advance WDC 2024’s mission of designing a better future. Hosting the ceremony at UC San Diego—a vibrant destination for arts, culture and innovation—was also a full-circle moment for the university. The campus’s Design Lab is one of five organizing partners of WDC 2024, alongside the Burnham Center for Community Advancement, the City of San Diego, the City of Tijuana and the Design Forward Alliance. The event was also hosted in partnership with ArtPower at UC San Diego.
At the Design Lab's 10th anniversary reception, held the same evening inside the Design & Innovation Building, Design Lab members and guests networked, caught up with old colleagues and shared new research findings and project outcomes. The evening captured the spirit of innovation and connection that have defined this yearlong designation and the Design Lab's impact on the region.
