This August, a rare deep-sea oarfish, only the 20th documented in California since 1901, was discovered by kayakers and snorkelers in La Jolla Cove. Scientists from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, CSU Fullerton and NOAA Fisheries’ Southwest Fisheries Science Center have now performed a necropsy, obtaining samples to learn more about the unique fish before preserving it in Scripps' Marine Vertebrate Collection. Together with his beloved wife of 70 years, Iris, Strauss made a major impact on UC San Diego—and throughout the region—with support in areas including arts, culture and cancer research. A large-scale survey conducted by a team of international researchers led by investigators at the University of Amsterdam has found that scientists worldwide and across disciplines are extremely concerned about climate change and its cascading effects on every sphere of life.

UC San Diego neurobiologists have found evidence of altered development of the nervous system in mouse models of autism spectrum disorders (ASD), linking environmentally induced forms of ASD to changes in neurotransmitters.
