The San Diego Supercomputer Center at UC San Diego and the Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California (CENIC) have developed a prescient AI education infrastructure called CENIC AI Resource for K-12 education, public libraries, community colleges, the CSU and UC campus systems.
Students and professionals from all over the world travel to San Diego to take English as a Second Language courses offered by the English Language Institute within UC San Diego Extended Studies International Programs. For many of them, mastering English is not only a professional necessity and a gateway to greater opportunities but also a way to better serve their communities. Now, Extended Studies is leveraging cutting-edge research, cognitive science and robotics to help these constituents improve their English language skills.
The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) has renewed funding for OpenTopography, a science gateway that advances understanding of the Earth’s surface, vegetation and built environment. OpenTopography is a comprehensive platform for open access to high-resolution (one meter pixel resolution or better) and global topographic data that is utilized by an international community of researchers, educators, government agencies, industry and hobbyists.
Through a unique and long-standing collaboration, electrical engineers at UC San Diego are embedded in Jacobs Retina Center to partner with ophthalmologists to develop better computer vision, AI, and image processing tools to help physicians diagnose patients faster and more accurately; predict which drugs will be most successful for specific patients; and even aid in the process of developing new therapeutic treatments for retinal diseases.
In a step toward using artificial intelligence to provide faster and more accurate lactation care to breastfeeding mothers, engineers at UC San Diego developed a tool to identify breastfeeding-related conditions from simple phone images.
Meet CARMEN, short for Cognitively Assistive Robot for Motivation and Neurorehabilitation–a small, tabletop robot designed to help people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) learn skills to improve memory, attention, and executive functioning at home.
