Finding Cures for Devastating Diseases

Pradeep Khosla capped off his first day as UC San Diego chancellor by touring the Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine, a new, state-of-the-art stem cell research facility dedicated to research and finding cures and therapies for some of society’s most devastating diseases. This new “collaboratory” brings together UC San Diego’s research partners on the mesa in a way that allows for unique collaborations that otherwise may not be possible.

UC San Diego has an internationally recognized program in stem cell research and regenerative medicine. At the Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine, UC San Diego scientists and physicians work side by side and in close partnership with colleagues from The Salk Institute, Sanford Burnham Medical Research Institute, The Scripps Research Institute and the La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology.

Khosla met with Larry Goldstein, a professor of cellular and molecular medicine who serves as director of the UC San Diego Stem Cell Research program.

“I was delighted by Chancellor Khosla’s excitement and enthusiasm for the work being done here,” Goldstein said. “His support will help further develop the partnerships and synergies we have forged, so that we can accelerate the translation of stem cell science and engineering to important breakthroughs in this new area of biomedical research.”
