UC San Diego recognizes first generation graduates.

Student Affinity Groups Honor the Class of 2020

Each spring, UC San Diego’s event calendar traditionally fills with various commencement ceremonies designed to honor Triton graduates from all backgrounds. Now, with the coronavirus crisis forcing the cancellation of all large in-person gatherings, student affinity groups are turning to virtual celebrations to honor the academic milestone.

As places of belonging that contribute toward a more inclusive and socially just campus climate, these groups serve students during their academic career and as they cross the finish line to graduation. Below is a sampling of ways that UC San Diego’s various campus community centers and groups dedicated to student retention and success are acknowledging the achievements of the Class of 2020:

First-Gen Grad Virtual Recognition Website

On the newly-launched First-Gen Grad Virtual Recognition website, you can read the stories, accomplishments, words of gratitude and profiles of the Class of 2020 First-Gen Graduates. To be a part of the UC-wide First-gen graduates class of 2020 community, use the social media tags #FirstGenUC, #NewUCGrad and #Class of 2020 #celebrateFirstGen #FirstGenForward.

Black Resource Center Graduation Celebration Video

A celebration video, featuring graduate acknowledgments, future plans and personal documentation will be shared by the Black Resource Center on June 12. Alongside this video, the Class of 2020 is also invited to participate in the 2021 Black Graduate Ceremony, where graduates from both classes will be highlighted. To learn more, visit brc.ucsd.edu.

Xicanx/Latinx Graduation

The Raza Resource Centro will be hosting a virtual Xicanx/Latinx Graduation ceremony on June 12 at 3:30 p.m. The online celebration is intended to highlight the achievement of higher education completion in all degree fields for the latinx student community. Honoring UC San Diego’s 2020 UC San Diego LGBTQIA+ graduates

On June 12 at 7 p.m., the LGBT Resource Center will be premiering a video on YouTube in honor of LGBTQIA+ students who are graduating from UC San Diego. The link to access the video premier will be posted on the center’s Facebook and Instagram pages. The video will feature special memories shared by the graduating class and messages from guest speakers, and will be followed by a live DJ performance.

Native American Graduates Honoring Ceremony

Native American students graduating from UC San Diego are invited to join the Intertribal Resource Center’s Native American Graduates Honoring Ceremony 2020. Due to ongoing health and safety concerns, the honoring ceremony will not be held on the originally scheduled date and time. Graduating students can stay tuned to itrc.ucsd.edu for updates, as the center considers alternative dates and experiences to celebrate graduation.
