In a world where people prefer to be alone together, what will become of filmmaking and film-going? It sounds as much like the beginning of a futuristic movie trailer as it does the impetus for a film festival — specifically the inaugural Filmatic Festival, a collaboration between ArtPower! and the Qualcomm Institute at the University of California, San Diego.
Gary Shteyngart, critically acclaimed author of “Absurdistan” and “Super Sad True Love Story,” will appear at the University of California, San Diego on May 12 at 7 p.m. in Mandeville Auditorium. He will be joined onstage by Seth Lerer, dean of the UC San Diego Division of Arts and Humanities, for a conversation about Shteyngart's life and work, followed by a book signing of his latest book, “Little Failure: A Memoir.”
A rich digital archive documenting the UFW Farmworkers’ Movement in Central California from 1962 to 1993 has been acquired by the University of California, San Diego Library. The archive, which was developed by LeRoy Chatfield, includes a wide variety of information on the activities, accomplishments, challenges, and work of Cesar Chavez and the farmworkers who participated in the farmworker movement.
Gigantic corpse flowers take their name from the rotting stench they emit when they bloom – a two-day spectacle that only happens every few years. Very few of us will ever see or smell one in person. But in a UC San Diego department of visual arts research lab, artist MR Barnadas is creating life-size models of two varieties of the plant, which can grow to 10 feet tall or more.
Painter and sculptor Ernest Silva, professor emeritus of visual arts at UC San Diego, died on Feb. 24. He was 65. Silva joined the faculty in 1979 and retired in 2013.
Fans of the whimsical collection of Dr. Seuss children’s books may one day be treated to new volumes in the wildly popular series. More than 1,500 new materials from the personal archive of author Theodor Seuss Geisel have been donated by Audrey Geisel to the UC San Diego Library, including a variety of unpublished projects, such as “Cat Ballooning,” “The Pet Shop,” “Bee Watches,” “How Welk Can You Spelk,” “The Clock Book,” and “Arabian Adventures.”
