HVAC Renewal Improves Comfort and Efficiency at Geisel Library

Modern systems, improved reliability and long-term savings help future-proof one of campus’s most recognizable buildings.

A major HVAC renewal project has modernized Geisel Library’s aging heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, improving comfort, reliability and energy performance while preserving the architectural character of one of UC San Diego’s most iconic academic facilities.

The two-year project replaced older infrastructure with modern, energy-efficient systems designed to support the library well into the future. The work was carefully phased to minimize disruption to daily operations and protect library collections throughout construction.

An extensive heating and cooling upgrade

The renewal included far more than a simple equipment replacement.

Major air handling units were replaced or refurbished, and new supply, return and outside air distribution systems were installed throughout the building. The project also addressed deteriorated hydronic piping, modernized HVAC controls and upgraded fire and life safety interfaces to support the new systems.

With the renovated HVAC system now in place, Geisel Library is benefiting from improved ventilation, temperature control, occupant comfort and overall system reliability.

Replacing deteriorated mechanical equipment, combined with digital controls, upgraded hydronic systems and improved air distribution significantly reduced the energy losses associated with the building’s original 1960s-era systems. The result is more consistent environmental control throughout the library and a stronger foundation for long-term operations and maintenance.

Estimated project benefits include:

  • Nearly 40% reduction in overall building energy consumption
  • About $50,000 in annual utility cost savings
  • Significant reductions in peak electrical demand
  • At least 25% lower fan energy use

Strategic improvements during construction

As construction progressed, the project team identified unforeseen opportunities to complete additional long-term improvements while access was available.

One of the most significant enhancements was the removal of the obsolete Level 3 smoke evacuation fan system and associated ductwork. Because the renovated HVAC configuration eliminated the need for portions of the original smoke evacuation infrastructure, crews were able to remove outdated fan equipment, ductwork, electrical systems, fire alarm components and related fire protection elements.

The team also installed netting in three stairwells to provide a fall protection system that enhances safety while preserving the building's iconic open architectural design. The netting mitigates the risk of accidental falls and helps prevent injuries from falling objects such as books, tools or other debris. By maintaining visibility, natural light and unobstructed emergency egress, the safety netting improves safety for students, faculty, staff, visitors and maintenance crews without altering the functionality or character of the stairwells.

Supporting long-term seismic resilience

The project also created an opportunity to advance the university’s broader seismic improvement efforts.

Because HVAC demolition exposed interior core walls that would normally remain concealed, the team was able to install fiber-reinforced polymer structural wraps as part of UC San Diego’s planned seismic strengthening program. Completing that work during the HVAC renewal made strategic use of existing access, reduced the need for future disruption and lowered the cost of later construction.

The result is a project that delivered value beyond its original scope while supporting the university’s long-term capital improvement goals
