November 12, 2015 — The Open Science Grid, a multi-disciplinary research partnership specializing in high-throughput computational services funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation, has added high-performance virtualized clusters to its global infrastructure by taking advantage of a new and unique capability of Comet, the National Science Foundation’s newest supercomputer at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC).

November 5, 2015 — The recently formed Office of Innovation & Commercialization (OIC), a division of the Office of Research Affairs, is announcing the Open-Flow Innovation program, a new business-friendly approach to rapidly license technologies to new start-up companies.

November 2, 2015 — The NSF has announced funding for a ‘Big Data’ Innovation Hub for the Western United States intended to facilitate collaboration among the region’s technology sector and other organizations to address research challenges across areas such as precision medicine, natural resource utilization, hazard management, and metro regional development. The Western Hub is part of an NSF program announced today that includes four awards totaling more than $5 million to establish regional hubs for data science innovation.

October 26, 2015 — The San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at the University of California, San Diego, has appointed Karen R. Flammer as Director of Education at SDSC, succeeding Diane Baxter, who officially retires on November 30. Flammer officially began her new role on October 1.

October 20, 2015 — Cisplatin is part of the chemotherapy treatment programs for many of the most common types of cancer. This important drug has now been shown to play an unexpected role in blocking one of the pathways most commonly involved in driving the growth of cancers, according to a recent study by researchers at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) as well as the university’s Moores Cancer Center and Department of Neurosciences.

October 19, 2015 — The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the United Kingdom’s Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) have awarded funding for the Neuroscience Gateways project led by the San Diego Supercomputer Center at the University of California, San Diego. The project will contribute to the national BRAIN initiative announced by the Obama administration in 2013 to advance researchers’ understanding of the human brain.

October 15, 2015 — The University of California, San Diego has been named the 11th most ethnically diverse college in the nation, according to a new report. Best College Reviews, a ranking service for American colleges and universities, recently released a list of the top 50 ethnically diverse schools.  Statistics and definitions of race/ethnicity for the list were gathered from the National Center for Education Statistics, Diverse Issues in Higher Education and school websites. According to the report, UC San Diego looks at diversity as an opportunity for education.

October 7, 2015 — University of California, San Diego School of Medicine’s Rob Knight, PhD, and his team built a microbiome analysis platform called QIIME (pronounced “chime” and short for “Quantitative Insights Into Microbial Ecology”). This software will now be more readily accessible to hundreds of thousands of researchers around the world through BaseSpace, a cloud-based app store offered by Illumina, a San Diego-based company that develops life science tools for the analysis of genetic variation.

September 28, 2015 — The San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at the University of California, San Diego, has made significant upgrades to its cloud-based storage system to include a new range of computing services designed to support science-based researchers, especially those with large data requirements that preclude commercial cloud use, or who require collaboration with cloud engineers for building cloud-based services.

September 28, 2015 — If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a graph can be worth a lot more than that in the burgeoning field of big data, even though translating terabytes of data into meaningful insights is no easy feat.
