UC San Diego is ranked the 14th best university in the world for the third consecutive year, according to the 2015 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). The rankings were recently released by the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, a public research university located in Shanghai, China, renowned as one of the oldest and most prestigious and selective universities in China. In addition, UC San Diego’s programs in life sciences, engineering, computer science, chemistry, and economics are ranked among the top 20 in the world. Nationally, UC San Diego is listed as the 12th best university.

UC San Diego has been named the 7th “Coolest School” by Sierra magazine, climbing 10 spots from last year in the publication’s annual ranking of America’s greenest colleges. The campus was recognized for its commitment to protecting the environment, reducing water use significantly, addressing climate issues and encouraging environmental responsibility.

The mystartupXX accelerator program, a collaboration of the California Institute for Innovation and Development at the Rady School of Management at UC San Diego and the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering, has been chosen for a second time as one of the winners of the national Growth Accelerator Fund competition and recipient of a $50,000 award from the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Scientists have discovered an exception to an otherwise globally observed pattern—usually biodiversity is greatest in the tropics and decreases toward the poles. The research team collected snails and parasites from 43 field sites spread across five countries and found that parasite prevalence, diversity, and competition rates all increased at higher latitudes, reversing previous ideas.

Researchers at Harvard University and the University of California, San Diego, have developed a new user-friendly resource to accompany the powerful gene editing tool called CRISPR/Cas9, which has been widely adopted to make precise, targeted changes in DNA. This breakthrough has the potential to facilitate new discoveries in gene therapies and basic genetics research. The research was published in the July 13 issue of Nature Methods.
