On Wednesday, March 1, UC San Diego will hand out its 2016 Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Diversity Awards at a ceremony in the Price Center West Ballroom. Three Jacobs School of Engineering faculty made the honor roll: CSE’s Christine Alvarado, ECE’s Pamela Cosman, and NanoEngineering’s Darren Lipomi.

Thanks to local and regional elected officials who helped assure passage of Assembly Bill 2664, the University of California San Diego has received $2.2 million from the UC system to help spur innovation and entrepreneurship on campus.

Of the 10 Microsoft Ph.D. Fellowships announced today by Microsoft Research, two of the awards went to graduate students in UC San Diego’s Jacobs School of Engineering: Computer Science and Engineering Ph.D. student Mengting Wan, and Electrical and Computer Engineering Ph.D. student Bita Darvish Rouhani. No other university received more than one of this year’s fellowships.

Computer Science and Engineering Ph.D. student C. Ailie Fraser has been awarded one of ten Adobe Research Fellowships in 2017 to pursue her work in human-computer interaction and human-centered design as a researcher in the Design Lab at UC San Diego.

UC San Diego alumnus Ross Tate (Ph.D. ’12), now a computer-science professor at Cornell, will receive the Dahl-Nygaard Prize in 2017 for “fundamental contributions to type systems with applications to object-oriented languages.”

In her first year as an assistant professor at UC San Diego, Computer Science and Engineering as well as Medicine professor Melissa Gymrek is already bringing honor to the institution. In its 2017 roster of top-notch young scientists, Forbes magazine included Gymrek among its top 30 researchers in the Science category under age 30.

Researchers in UC San Diego's Center for Networked Systems (CNS) will be out in force at the 14th USENIX Symposium on Networked Systems Design and Implementation in March, with four papers, including two co-authored by CNS co-director and CSE professor George Porter.

Visitors to the gallery@calit2 on the University of California San Diego campus will be treated to a mind-expanding yet dystopic art show that asks a simple question: If life started today in our plastic debris-filled oceans, what kinds of life forms would emerge out of the contemporary primordial ooze? The exhibition, “An Ecosystem of Excess”, opens February 2 and runs through March 17.
