UC San Diego’s WIFIRE Program Provides Real-Time Information to Wildfire Responders

There is no alarm bell ringing or fire pole to slide down at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at UC San Diego’s School of Computing, Information and Data Science. Still, at the first sign of wildfire anywhere in California, members of the WIFIRE team are ready.

Researchers from the San Diego Supercomputer Center, part of the School of Computing, Information and Data Sciences (SCIDS) at UC San Diego, have launched a new initiative to advance science and technology that addresses wildland fire challenges in an era of more frequent and devastating megafires.

In the mid-1960s, Jorge Carrillo discovered a way out of the life of migrant farm work through a UC San Diego college readiness program. Later, he, his wife and two children graduated from Marshall College and have gone on to establish a scholarship endowment to help students in financial need.
